What is Hoops 4 Healthy Hearts?
Bristol Academy Flyers launched the Community project Hoops 4 Healthy Hearts in January 2008 after receiving funding to run the pilot in South Gloucestershire was received from Heart Research UK and Filton College. The scheme has gone from Strength to Strength and to date has been delivered to over 5,000 primary school children since January 2008. The Project has now also moved into two clusters of North Bristol Schools with work being carried out in 16 primary schools who are in the Monks Park and Oasis Academy Brightstowe Families.
The scheme delivers the message of a healthy lifestyle to year 3/4/5 and 6 pupils in curriculum time. The project uses the medium of basketball to grab the attention of the pupils and this works fantastically well with the sessions being delivered by Flyers professional American players. The sessions incorporate a healthy diet, no to smoking and also keeping a healthy heart. There are also lots of fun things to do including designing an anti smoking poster, a fun quiz and lots of fun games etc to play whilst learning a very important message about making the best of your life choices. From the class room pupils learn skills and drills in an hour long coaching session each week preparing for the opportunity to play in a local mini tournament with other schools and the chance to see a top flight basketball game at the home of the Flyers with some free match day tickets. There are also numerous prizes on offer including Flyers branded T shirts and much more.
The project has been such a huge success in South Gloucestershire that has now become part of the County’s Educational Strategy for coming years as it meets many of the objectives set out in Key stage 2 Science. Bristol Academy Flyers and Heart Research UK have now worked to develop the scheme further to involve more schools and give more young people the opportunity to get involved in basketball. The project is being developed to move into both North Bristol and North Somerset giving more opportunity to spread this important message.
Young players not only get the chance to learn in, and out of the classroom but they get the chance to follow a pathway into the sport through The Flyers development Centre. The Development Centre runs every Saturday morning in the Flyers state of art home, Filton College’s WISE Campus. These sessions give professional coaching to young players from 6 years of age upwards and the opportunity to become one of the Flyers juniors in years to come and play for the club at National League level.
