Flyers II stay top of the division

Bristol Academy Flyers II remain top of National League Division IV South West after a crushing home victory over Team Gloster Jets. Flyers II convincingly beat their local rivals 88 points to 36 at Filton College WISE Campus on Saturday.

Flyers II started slowly, exchanging baskets with Gloster early in the first quarter. Neither team could break the deadlock and it became very clear that Flyers were not playing to their full potential. Flyers failed to capitilise on the size difference between the two teams. Gloster fought hard and forced the Flyers offence to falter. Towards the end of the quarter the home team exerted more defensive pressure forcing Gloster to turn the ball over, leading to Flyers scoring easily on a fast break. Led by Jernmaine Major and Horst Marschall, Flyers took a seven point lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the Flyers take control of the game. Much of this domination came from the defensive end as Flyers young athletes moved through the gears and began to rack up points from Gloster turn over’s. Richard Loftman and Lee Treasure forced numerous turn over’s from the visiting guards. Flyers were able to rotate the whole bench into the game adding relentless pressure to a tired Gloster. Hans Soghe, Jermaine Major and Abdi Ahmed dominated offensively with Sean Porter also playing a marksman’s role hitting three 3 pointers in the quarter.

Flyers went into the half time break after a 21 point to 7 win in the second quarter finishing with a 3 point shot from Ali Hassan to give Flyers a comfortable 38 point to 18 lead.

The 3rd and 4th quarter saw Flyers take full control of the game. Horst Marschall, Abdi Ahmed and Tom Wood were controlling the boards with Wood blocking 6 shots in the second half of the game. Young Iri Omoyeni made a great impression scoring 5 quick points and steeling the ball 3 times. Flyers defensive intensity and athleticism was too much for Gloster as the home team finished the game with a 21 point to 8 point final quarter victory.

Danny James Head Coach commented: “We played well in spells today but started poorly, allowing Gloster to compete with us in the first quarter. We have the biggest team in this league and need to dominate inside a little more, we will work on this in the coming weeks and hopefully you will see more consistency in future games. Our young players were outstanding and the dynamics of the team are great. They have a real chance of winning the league and gaining promotion. I hope we are able to learn from our mistakes and continue to work hard and improve.”

Flyers scorers: L Treasure 16, Sean Porter 15, Horst Marschall 14, Jermaine Major 12, Abdi Ahmed 8, Richard Loftman 8, Iri Omoyeni 5, Ali Hassan and Tom Wood 3 points each.
